Butterfly Releases
There's something magical about watching a butterfly flutter from your hand into a sun-dappled garden, and that's exactly what families will experience at the Huntsville Botanical Garden's Butterfly Releases. These hands-on programs begin with a short educational presentation about butterfly life cycles and habitats before giving each participant the chance to gently release a live butterfly into the climate-controlled Purdy Butterfly House. It's a gentle introduction to conservation that feels more like wonder than a lesson, perfect for preschoolers experiencing their first butterfly encounter and older elementary kids eager to learn about metamorphosis and ecosystems. The 30-minute programs take place on select Saturdays throughout the summer at both 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., running from May through September. Registration is required and space fills up quickly, so advance reservations are essential. Garden members pay $8 per person regardless of age, while non-members pay $27 for adults and $20 for children ages 3-15. Children two and under only need a ticket if they'll be participating in an actual release. The May 23rd session runs at 11:00 a.m. at the Purdy Butterfly House on the Garden grounds at 4747 Bob Wallace Avenue. Bring your camera or smartphone—the moment when a painted lady or monarch spreads its wings on a child's open palm makes for an unforgettable photo. Younger children may need help understanding how to hold still and let the butterfly take its time, so patience pays off. The indoor butterfly house stays comfortably temperate even on hot Alabama summer days, making this an ideal mid-morning activity before the afternoon heat sets in.
