Forest Friends at Chapman Mountain
Forest Friends at Chapman Mountain is a delightful nature discovery program created especially for families with preschoolers and older toddlers. Led by Angie McCollum, these gentle woodland explorations use stories, songs, and art to help little ones ages 3 to 5 develop a loving connection to the outdoors. The program's philosophy is simple and sweet: children protect the places they love, so these playful sessions aim to spark curiosity and wonder that will grow alongside your child. Younger siblings are welcome to tag along, making this a genuine family outing where everyone can enjoy the beautiful forest habitat together. The April 27 session begins at 10:00 AM at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve, located at 1263 U.S. Highway 72 East. Admission is free, though memberships supporting the Land Trust's mission are appreciated. Registration is required and space is limited, so families should reserve just one spot per household (not per child). If the weather doesn't cooperate, the rain date is April 29. Be sure to dress your little explorers in closed-toe shoes and long pants, and bring bug spray, sunscreen, and water to keep everyone comfortable during your outdoor adventure. After the program wraps up, families are welcome to stay and enjoy a picnic lunch from home, giving kids extra time to run and play in this lovely natural setting. Finding the preserve is straightforward: coming from Huntsville, cross Chapman Mountain, make a U-turn at Moores Mill Road, then watch for the entrance on your right where the silver guard rail ends. Follow the gravel road down to the parking area and prepare for a morning of forest fun perfectly suited to curious young minds.
