17th annual Mayor’s Bike Ride
The Mayor's Bike Ride returns for its 17th year, inviting families to pedal through downtown Huntsville alongside Mayor Tommy Battle. This free community event transforms a Saturday morning into an active adventure, with a leisurely four-mile route that winds through the heart of the city. It's a wonderful way to introduce kids to cycling beyond the neighborhood while celebrating healthy habits as a family. The route is designed to be accessible for confident young riders, making it especially suitable for children ages 5-14 who are comfortable riding in a group setting. The ride kicks off at 11 a.m. from Big Spring Park on Church Street, but plan to arrive by 10:30 a.m. for check-in and registration. The four-mile distance strikes a nice balance — long enough to feel like an accomplishment for younger cyclists, but manageable enough that it won't exhaust little legs. Parking near Big Spring Park can fill up for popular events, so give yourself extra time or consider biking to the start if you live nearby. Make sure everyone's bike is in good working order before the event, and don't forget helmets for the whole family. Bringing water bottles is smart, especially as May weather warms up. This is a great opportunity for kids who've outgrown training wheels to experience a real community ride, and the presence of the mayor and fellow families creates a supportive, celebratory atmosphere that makes exercise feel more like a party than a workout.
