Garden Care: Marie's Garden

The Garden Gnomes volunteer program invites families to help maintain Marie's Garden, a pollinator habitat at Blevins Gap Nature Preserve. These monthly workdays combine light gardening tasks like weeding, watering, and mulching with the chance to enjoy scenic mountain views while learning about the native plants that support butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects. It's outdoor time with purpose, and kids get the satisfaction of seeing their efforts make a real difference in their community's green spaces. This August session meets at 8 a.m. at the Blevins Gap Trailhead on Cecil Ashburn Drive SE. The early start time beats the summer heat, making it more comfortable for families working outdoors. No gardening experience is necessary—tools, extra gloves, and water will be provided, though you should bring your own water bottle, snacks, and work gloves if you have them. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for trail terrain. Each participant needs their own registration (guardians can register on behalf of children), as individual waivers are required. This program works well for elementary and middle school-aged kids who can handle basic garden tasks and enjoy being outdoors. Younger children may lose interest during the work session, so consider their attention span before signing up the whole family. The Land Trust will email registered participants if weather or trail conditions force a cancellation, so check your inbox the morning of the event.
