Trail Care: Cane Creek Canyon

Families looking for a meaningful outdoor adventure will find it at this trail maintenance morning at Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve. Working alongside experienced Land Stewards, volunteers help care for the miles of trails that wind through one of Alabama's most stunning natural areas. It's hands-on conservation work that teaches kids the value of stewardship while getting them outside in a beautiful setting. Tasks change with the seasons and trail conditions, so every visit brings something different — from clearing brush to repairing erosion damage. The work begins at 9 a.m. on August 9th at the preserve in Tuscumbia, about an hour's drive west of Huntsville. Participants should be ready for a moderate workout, as the day may include hiking up to three miles with elevation changes exceeding 250 feet. No prior trail work experience is necessary, and the Land Trust provides extra tools, work gloves, and water. Each volunteer needs their own registration (guardians can register on behalf of children), and everyone must sign a waiver. There's no cost to participate. This is ideal for families with kids ages 8 and up who can handle the physical demands and want to learn about conservation. Come prepared with sturdy, closed-toe shoes, your own water bottle, snacks, and work gloves if you have them.
