High School Hike at Harvest Square
High school students will discover an unexpected connection between brain science and the natural world during this specialized hike at Harvest Square Nature Preserve. Led by neuroscientist and educator Rosemary Puckett, the program explores how spending time in nature actually changes our brains, creating memories and influencing our mental health and mood. Through hands-on investigations, group projects, and nature journaling, teens will learn about neurons, sensory systems, and mindfulness practices — then put these concepts to the test during an immersive walk through the woods. The experience is designed specifically for ages 14-18 and is sponsored by the PPG Foundation. The program takes place on Saturday, May 30th at 1:00 PM at Harvest Square Nature Preserve in Harvest. An accompanying adult is required for all participants. Registration is required in advance, and the organizers will send email notifications if weather or trail conditions force a cancellation. The preserve is easy to find from Huntsville — take Jordan Lane to Jeff Road, turn right at the Publix sign onto Allyson Sadie Boulevard, and follow it to the gravel parking lot and trailhead. Teens should wear closed-toe shoes and consider long pants to protect against brush and bugs. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, and plenty of water, as the program includes both active exploration and quiet reflection time outdoors. This is a rare opportunity for high schoolers to learn cutting-edge neuroscience concepts while experiencing firsthand how nature can support their wellness and mental health.
