Hike at Harvest Square
If your family is new to hiking or just wants a relaxed morning outdoors, this guided walk at Harvest Square Nature Preserve is an ideal introduction to trail exploration. The preserve was designed with accessibility in mind, featuring smooth crushed limestone paths and newly-installed boardwalks that make it easy for younger children to navigate. With only 20 feet of elevation gain over the entire 1.75-mile route, little legs won't get discouraged by steep climbs, and parents won't spend the outing carrying tired hikers. The hike meets at 9:00 AM on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the preserve located at 111 Allyson Sadie Boulevard in Harvest. The walk takes about an hour and covers nearly all of the preserve's trails, with the leader choosing the specific route based on conditions that day. While there's no cost listed for participation, you'll need to register in advance so organizers can send weather-related updates if conditions require a cancellation. This outing works well for families with children ages 4-14, especially those building stamina and confidence on trails. The flat terrain means kids can focus on observing nature rather than watching their footing constantly. Bring water bottles, wear comfortable shoes, and consider packing a small snack for after the walk. Morning temperatures in mid-May are typically pleasant in North Alabama, but sunscreen and hats are smart additions to your gear.
