Trail Build: Hickory Cove

Families looking for a meaningful outdoor adventure can help build a piece of Huntsville's future trail system. Tim Barnack leads volunteers in constructing a new connector trail between Hickory Cove and Monte Sano State Park, offering hands-on experience in trail-building while contributing to the local hiking network. This project gives kids and parents alike the chance to work together on something that benefits the entire community, and no prior experience is necessary. The work involves hiking up to 4 miles with over 200 feet of elevation change, so participants should be comfortable with moderate physical activity. The event takes place on August 19, 2026, starting at 8:30 AM from the Bankhead Parkway turnoff. Since this location doesn't have a street address, organizers provide a map link for precise directions. Each participant must register individually and sign a waiver, with guardians signing for children. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are required, and volunteers should bring bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, eye protection, and plenty of water. There's no cost to participate. This experience works well for families with older children who can handle the hiking distance and aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. Younger siblings are welcome if parents think they can manage the trail length. The early start time helps beat the August heat, and the satisfaction of helping create a trail that families will use for years makes this a memorable bonding experience.
