Trail Build: Hickory Cove

Families with older kids looking for a meaningful outdoor project will find it at this trail-building volunteer day with the Land Trust. Led by Tim Barnack, participants will help construct a new trail connection between Hickory Cove and Monte Sano, creating a pathway that local hikers will use for years to come. It's a chance for kids ages 10 and up to learn basic trail-building techniques while contributing to Huntsville's expanding trail network. The project starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Bankhead Parkway turnoff (use the provided map link for directions, as there's no street address). Volunteers should be prepared for a moderately challenging day, with hikes covering up to 4 miles and elevation changes of more than 200 feet. No trail-building experience is necessary—just a willingness to work outdoors and learn something new. Registration is required for each participant, and guardians can sign up on behalf of their kids. Come prepared with sturdy closed-toe shoes, bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, and eye protection. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the morning. If weather or trail conditions force a cancellation, registered participants will receive an email notification. This is an ideal activity for families with preteens and teens who enjoy being active outdoors and want to give back to the community in a tangible way.
