Trail Care: Cane Creek Canyon

Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve invites families to help care for one of Alabama's most scenic trail systems through hands-on conservation work. This volunteer morning lets kids and adults work side-by-side with Land Stewards on projects like clearing brush, repairing trail surfaces, or removing debris—whatever the trails need most that day. It's a chance to teach children about environmental stewardship while exploring a preserve known for its waterfalls, limestone bluffs, and diverse wildlife. The work begins at 9:00 AM on August 23 at the preserve in Tuscumbia, about an hour's drive from Huntsville. Volunteers should prepare for a moderate workout: you'll likely hike up to three miles over terrain with elevation changes exceeding 250 feet. The preserve provides tools, extra work gloves, and water, but participants should bring their own water bottles, snacks, and sturdy work gloves if they have them. Closed-toe shoes with good traction are essential. Each person needs individual registration, and guardians can sign up on behalf of children, as everyone must complete a waiver. This event welcomes all ages and requires no previous trail maintenance experience—Land Stewards will guide volunteers through each task. It's particularly rewarding for kids old enough to handle basic outdoor work safely, typically around age 8 and up, though younger children can participate with close parental supervision.
